Apple’s High-End iPad Undergoes a Revolutionary Upgrade

In a move that signifies a monumental shift in the tablet landscape, Apple is set to upgrade its premium iPad models with state-of-the-art OLED displays. As reported by South Korea’s “The Elec,” Samsung Display, a titan in the panel manufacturing sector, has initiated mass production of OLED panels designated for Apple’s iPad, heralding a significant overhaul in the product lineup.

Samsung and LG in the Spotlight: The Battle for OLED Supremacy

As per sources quoted on January 17 by “The Elec,” Samsung Display, the principal supplier of OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone lineup, is poised to secure a lion’s share of the orders for iPad’s OLED panels. The primary focus will be on the 11-inch model, with mass production set to commence imminently. The report reveals that both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch variants of the iPad Pro will incorporate Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) OLED screens, akin to those featured in the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max.

In a parallel development, LG Display, a formidable rival, has also made significant inroads into the iPad OLED panel supply chain. The company is currently mass-producing 12.9-inch iPad OLED panels and is on the brink of commencing production for the 11-inch variant. While Samsung Display has previously been involved in the development of the 12.9-inch iPad OLED panel, its plans for mass production remain uncertain, with the reasons undisclosed.

A Tug of War for Quality: LG’s Edge and Potential Pitfalls

The battle for dominance in Apple’s iPad OLED panel orders paints a complex picture. LG Display appears to have gained an upper hand; however, the initial batch of panels may present challenges in terms of yield stability. Apple’s stringent quality control standards imply that if LG Display fails to meet these criteria, Apple may potentially increase its orders with Samsung Display, mirroring a pattern previously observed with the iPhone.

A New Chapter Begins: The Anticipated Launch of OLED iPad Pro

In terms of production timelines, Apple is on track to commence mass production of the OLED version of the iPad Pro in March, with an anticipated market launch in April. This development not only marks a significant technological advancement but also sets the stage for an intriguing competitive dynamic between two of the industry’s display manufacturing giants.
