Brompton Unveils Innovative 12-Speed Drivetrain for Its Folding Bikes

A Revolutionary Gearing System for Steeper Climbs

Brompton has recently launched a groundbreaking 12-speed drivetrain for its iconic folding bicycles, a significant advancement in bicycle technology. This new system integrates a four-speed cassette and derailleur with a three-speed Sturmey Archer geared hub, culminating in 12 unique gear combinations. This innovation is a unique blend of Brompton’s existing technologies, previously offered in their Explore line and P Line urban bikes.

Design and Functionality of the New Drivetrain

The new drivetrain, which combines a three-speed hub and a four-speed derailleur, marks a significant upgrade from Brompton’s typical six-speed ‘wide range’ drivetrain used in their Explorer bikes. This design features two mountain bike-style shifters on the handlebars, allowing riders to switch gears efficiently. The innovative combination aims to provide a more versatile and efficient riding experience, especially on steep inclines.

Diverse Options and Weights

Brompton offers this new drivetrain across various models, including electric assist and ‘acoustic’ bikes. The lightest model is the T Line Explore 12-speed, weighing a mere 8.8kg. The 12-speed option extends to Brompton’s e-bike range, with the Electric P Line Explore and Electric C Line Explore weighing 16.3kg and 17.3kg, respectively.

Pricing and Accessibility

The 12-speed drivetrain is available at different price points. The P Line Explore, the most affordable model, is priced at £2,450. Surprisingly, the most expensive is the all-titanium T Line Explore, costing £4,725, overshadowing the e-bike options in price.
